(MARENGO) - Two young Crawford County men were arrested early Saturday morning after making a routine traffic stop worse.
The state police Jasper post say they stopped a Jeep on SR-66 south of Marengo which was driven by 18-year-old William Lillpop of Sulphur, Indiana for an equipment violation. During the stop, his passenger, 19-year-old James Vanover of Leavenworth, jumped out of the Jeep and took off on foot.
After a short pursuit, police caught up with him and, after getting one handcuff on, Vanover allegedly turned and slugged one of the troopers in the face with the handcuff. Troopers subdued Vanover and completed the arrest.
Lillpop, the driver, was charged with operating while intoxicated and underage consumption. Vanover was charged with underage consumption, resisting law enforcement, and battery on a law enforcement officer, a Class-D Felony.
Both were taken to the Crawford County jail.
