(UNDATED) - Governor Daniels says a property tax relief plan he’ll unveil later this month will not call for outright elimination of the tax.
Daniels says advocates of abolition, led by his 2004 primary rival Eric Miller, have "their hearts in the right place, but the arithmetic doesn't work." And Daniels says other sources of revenue fluctuate too much with the economy to be a reliable stream of cash for schools and local government.
Daniels said he'd be calling for a constitutional amendment as part of his plan. He says that's the only way to ensure any tax relief is permanent.
