(UNDATED) - An Indiana fugitive sentenced to life in prison for murder and escaped from the Indiana women’s prison 35 years ago has been recaptured.
Linda Darby was sentenced in October 1970. She escaped by climbing over a barb- wired facility fence in March of 1972.
Darby, who now goes by the name Linda Joe McElroy, was apprehended October 12th by local law enforcement officers in Pulaski, Tennesse.
The Indiana Department of Correction's new Fugitive Apprehension Unit (IFAU) is being credited with aiding in Darby's capture.
The IFAU was launched two weeks ago. It will be focusing on apprehending offenders, dating back to 1950, who have left secured confinement, those that have walked away from non-secured residential programs as well as those who have absconded from parole supervision
To date, approximately 300 Indiana fugitives remain at large.
