(UNDATED) - Indiana is making more families eligible for state-funded child care.
Until now, you had to be within 40-percent of the poverty line to be eligible for child-care help. For a single mom with one child, that's an income of about $19,300 a year.
The state is using $10 million in federal block grant money to raise the threshold to 70-percent over the line, about $23, 400. Those figures increase with additional members of the household.
Family and Social Services Secretary Mitch Roob estimates the change will get about three-thousand more kids into child care, an increase of nine-percent.
Roob says the move should help parents struggling to get off welfare. He says there's often a catch-22 in which parents just starting to earn enough money make themselves ineligible for state day-care help.
