(TERRE HAUTE) - A rope resembling a noose was found hanging in a tree outside a building on the Indiana State University campus in Terre Haute.
School officials say the rope was reported hanging in a tree near Hines Hall about noon Thursday and was removed from the tree before police arrived.
A university news release says ISU officials notified police and the FBI about the incident.
Nooses are seen by some as symbols of segregation-era lynchings. A number have turned up recently around the country, including Muncie, where a sanitation worker said he attached nooses to his trash truck as a Halloween decoration. The worker was suspended for 30 days without pay after co-workers complained.
