(SHELBYVILLE) - A highway accident has killed a Shelbyville police officer.
Shelby County sheriff's officials say the officer had been called to help a deputy who had pulled over a suspected stolen vehicle.
They were on an entrance ramp to I-74 when a set of dual tires and wheels came off the trailer of a passing semi and hit the officer. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The accident has shut down a seven-mile stretch of eastbound I-74 since just before midnight.
Police aren't releasing the officer's name until they can notify relatives.
No charges have been filed, but officials from the Shelby County prosecutor's office are at the scene.
