(UNDATED) - With the Thanksgiving holiday behind them, area food banks are now looking for donations to help needy families over the Christmas holidays.
Gleaners Food Bank says, in Central Indiana alone, more than 205-thousand Hoosiers need food assistance on a weekly basis, including nearly 79-thousand kids who may not develop properly for lack of nutritious food.
Officials say America's hungry are more than 'street people' you see carrying torn trash bags, it's also the elderly, the working poor, single- parent households... and children.
At Hunger, Inc. on Indy's east side-- which relies mainly on school food drives -- Dennis Thompson says donations are down this year.
Monetary donations are welcome as well as such staple food items as peanut butter and jelly, spaghetti and sauce, box cereal, eggs, cheese and hot dogs.
