(INDIANAPOLIS) - As the winter weather sets in, officials are warning about the danger of skating on thin ice.
Retention ponds behind businesses and apartment complexes can be tempting, especially for youngsters, as they begin to freeze.
Captain Gregg Harris with the Indianapolis Fire Department says there's no safe ice. Harris warns of the danger of hypothermia for those who might fall into the icy water, saying even the best swimmer might not survive the shock the body encounters.
He recommends that people who want to ice skate go to the state fairgrounds or other public rinks.
