(INDIANAPOLIS) - As friends and admirers filed past the casket of U.S. Representative Julia Carson Friday, many attended a memorial service for her at the Statehouse.
The late congresswoman was eulogized as someone who stood up for the less fortunate. Rev. Jesse Jackson with the Rainbow Push Coalition said Julia used her time well, and made the right choices. He said Julia leaves a legacy for fighting and comprehensive health care.
Many who attended, including colleagues from congress, said the world is a better place because of Julia Carson.
There were some lighter moments with former Gary Mayor Richard Hatcher recalling how lucky you were to have Julia as a friend and "not on the other side".
And Indianapolis Mayor Bart Peterson , noting that many times, elected officials just want to call someone an idiot. Peterson said he was revealing "his little secret" for the first time...recalling when he and Julia would get together from time to time and "those people who needed to be called idiots were called idiots'.
