(UNDATED) - There’s another property tax problem for taxpayers in five counties.
Billing delays mean the 2008 due date makes it ineligible to claim on 2007 tax returns. Taxpayers in Clark, Jasper, Lake, LaPorte and Porter counties are affected and possibly Brown County depending on when they get their bills out.
Valparaiso Republican Senator Ed Charbonneau authored legislation allowing those taxpayers to claim two deductions on their 2008 state income taxes.
The senator says the one year delay in the deduction is the best solution because claiming the deduction sooner would create havoc with the revenue services and 2007 tax forms and e-filing software.
The legislation passed unanimously out of the appropriations committee.
