(UNDATED) - An Indiana National Guard soldier was one of more than 90 others honored this weekend during the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio, Texas.
Staff Sgt. Patrick Shannon was recognized during the nationally televised event for earning a bronze star medal and purple heart while serving in Iraq.
The Indiaanapolis native and 12-year National Guard veteran says he was just doing his job.
He used the trip to talk to high school athletes about the military. The U.S. Army All-American Bowl each year features some of the country's best high school football players.
The Army says the athletes and soldiers like Shannon live by the same principles of courage and strength.
