(STATEHOUSE) - An amended Senate bill 16, which eliminates township assessors, advanced through the senate’s local government and elections committee on Wednesday by a 5 to 4 vote.
The bill is part of Governor Mitch Daniels property tax reform package. It transfers the property tax assessment duties from elected township assessors and township trustees to the county assessor.
The bill also mandates strong professional certification to qualify for an appraising job.
The amendment moves the measure's effective date up six months to July 1, 2008.
