(WEST LAFAYETTE) - West Lafayette Mayor John Dennis sustained minor injuries in a rollover crash Friday evening near South Haven, Michigan.
Dennis said Saturday that he had been driving a 2000 Ford Explorer with his wife, Mary, in the passenger seat and the family dog, Jack.
Dennis said he was driving in lake effect snow when he lost traction on a patch of ice and the Explorer rolled several times. He severed a tendon in his left hand that attaches to the middle finger and his finger is in a splint. Mary Dennis was uninjured. Jack, a 3-year old mixed breed dog, was thrown from the vehicle and is believed to have died instantly.
Dennis may have been driving a little too fast for the rapidly deteriorating conditions, said Trooper Carlos Fossati, of the Michigan State Police. "But there's no way to say what a safer speed may have been," Fossati said. "He wasn't given a ticket. It was a sheer white-out."
