(INDIANAPOLIS) - An Indianapolis community group is asking state and city leaders to establish a new park in honor of Abraham Lincoln.
Canal Park Advocate John Gibson says the small space is just east of the Indiana History Center. "It's a beautiful slope that lends itself to concerts that are often held across the canal at the historical society," Gibson said.
Canal Park Advocates say there are reasons why they picked Lincoln's name for the acre of land. "Lincoln gave a historic talk not far from this site," Gibson said. "Since he is one of our most famous Americans, we wanted to link something of local value with his name and character."
Gibson expects Governor Mitch Daniels and Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard to make a decision prior to Lincoln's 200th birthday.
