(UNDATED) - Local officials in Johnson County are hoping for a bigger federal commitment on the proposed east-west corridor. It would run from State Road 37 in Morgan County, through Johnson County and past I-65 into Shelby County.
Greenwood Mayor Charles Henderson said the current plan for the corridor is a good one. But he's concerned about whether or not the Indiana Department of Transportation will add an interchange on I-65 at Worthsville Road. Mayor Henderson says without it, the proposed route of the east-west corridor won't be practical.
Johnson County Commissioner Tom Kite says funding is also a major problem, since the county is struggling just to maintain existing roads. Kite said he's hoping the corridor project gets more federal help to go beyond the planning stage.
Congressman Steve Buyer surprised the local officials with a proposal to expand the project into a series of corridors passing though all seven counties surrounding Indianapolis. The result would look like a square surrounding the Circle City beyond 465.
