Thousands Could Lose Drivers Licenses

Last updated on Saturday, February 2, 2008

(INDIANAPOLIS) - The Bureau of Motor Vehicles plans to revoke 56,000 driver’s licenses in a couple of weeks.

They're the licenses of people whose social security information doesn't match what's on their license.

The BMV has been working to resolve discrepancies for two months. An initial comparison with a social security database found problems with 206,000 registrations, about three-percent of the total.

Most of those problems have been resolved -- the BMV says several of the problems involved women who had their married name in one database and their maiden name in the other. Another 33,000 drivers are dead, have moved out of state, or have let their licenses expire.

Officials say several hundred of the remaining discrepancies involve commercial driver's licenses. Those drivers will get a third letter from the BMV warning them they need to fix the problem.
