(STATEHOUSE) - Thieves have figured out there’s a lot of stuff you can steal and resell even from an empty house.
Now the state is pushing back. The state already requires scrap metal dealers to get a photo ID from people selling used copper wire, to help police catch the ones who stole it from where it was being used.
Now Governor Daniels has signed an expansion of that law to cover other metals, as well as blinds, shutters, and other housing materials.
Indianapolis Representative John Day says the law also creates a study committee to review whether the law is reducing thefts.
