(KOKOMO) - A strange night north of Indianapolis. Residents in Howard and Tipton counties report hearing a loud explosion, sending police and firefighters scrambling.
Some saw bright lights in the western sky just after hearing the blast last night. Police believe the boom and lights may have been caused by a meteor or other atmospheric disturbance.
Immediately after the boom, there was a slight metallic smell in the air in Downtown Kokomo. Indiana State Police Sergeant Jeremy Kelly says they could not find any evidence of a crash site.
Grissom RAFB was conducting tests Wednesday night, but Kelly says they had been out of the area for at least an hour.
Tipton County Sheriff Frank Fritz says his officers did hear the boom, but were as puzzled as everyone else as to what happened.
Kelly did say several eyewitnesses claim it was a UFO. Experts with the Holcomb Observatory at Butler say it was most likely a meteor shower.
