Statehouse Hosts Memorial For Hoosiers Killed On The Job

Last updated on Tuesday, April 29, 2008

(STATEHOUSE) - The laying of carnations and the reading of names marked the annual Workers’ Memorial Day service at the statehouse.

Families cried and held hands as the name of those killed on the job over the last year were called. Labor Commissioner Lori Torres says Indiana has made great strides in cutting down the number of fatalities and injuries on the job.

Torres says they've added more frequent inspections to the state's factories and mines. She says the stats show the difference - one in ten Hoosier workers would be likely to be injured or killed on the job a decade ago.

Now, the number is closer to one in 20.
