(TERRE HAUTE) - Vigo County will soon begin work on a new 800-acre park.
A $295,000-dollar check from the state will help the parks department buy 800 acres of wetland just across the Wabash River from Terre Haute.
The county will spend the next few years developing a nine-mile hiking trail around it, planting thousands of trees, and building wildlife observation areas.
Parks Superintendent Keith Ruble says the land is flood-prone, making it marginal for farming but a prime vacation spot for migratory birds.
The county is eying the purchase of another 450 acres.
