Women's Prison To Allow Pregnant Inmates To Stay With Babies

Last updated on Thursday, April 17, 2008

(INDIANAPOLIS)- Pregnant inmates in the Indiana women’s prison can now live with their babies.

The Wee Ones Nursery Program is now open in the prison. The program allows pregnant, non-violent offenders to live with their babies in the special nursery facility.

The participating mothers are agreeing to participate in child-related programming to develop parenting skills and strengthen the bond with their children.

Inmate Melissa Lankey says despite being in prison, she's blessed to have her newborn baby Kevin with her.

The Wee One's Nursery is a first of its kind in the state, and only the 6th in the nation.
