(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indianapolis police say a four-year old girl was accidentally shot and killed by her five-year old brother.
Police Sergeant Matt Mount says the five-year old climbed up on a chair in the living room and retrieved his father's gun at the top of a bookshelf. The boy started playing with the gun. He pointed the gun at his sister and pulled the trigger, shooting her in the head.
Four-year old Makayla Booher was pronounced dead at the scene.
Mount says the children's father, 24-year-old James Booher was in the house at the time of the shooting but wasn't aware of what was going on.
Police say he and the children's mother, 34-year-old Michelle Vensko, are separated. She was not in the house at the time.
Both the five-year old boy and his 15-year old stepsister, who was also in house, have been placed in the care of Child Protective Services while the investigation continues.
Sergeant Mount says detectives are discussing with the prosecutor's office about possible neglect charges against the father.
