(INDIANAPOLIS) - In the wake of weeks of shootings and murders, Chicago police are arming their officers with assault rifles.
While the concept might seem extreme, it's something Indianapolis Metro Police have been doing for several years.
Lieutenant Jeff Duhamell says the program started several years ago. About 200 officers are armed with assault rifles.
Duhamell admits those guns aren't used often, but they can come into play for things like bank robberies or hostage situations.
Duhamell says they want to expand the program to more officers but money is a concern.
The initial roll-out of the assault rifles came from the US military.
