(UNDATED) - Officials with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources are reaching out to folks who will take to the water this summer.
There were 474 drowning deaths from motorboat accidents in the U.S. in 2006 and officials say 90% of the victims were not wearing life jackets.
Indiana Conservation Officer Mark Farmer says that's likely because people are quick to come up with excuses for not wearing a life jacket.
Farmer adds that Indiana law requires one well-fitting, U.S. Coast Guard approved life jacket for each passenger aboard every watercraft.
