(GARY) - Gary Mayor Rudy Clay is calling his recent trade mission to China a major success.
A delegation of about 15 business, education and government leaders traveled to the country in hopes of securing economic development opportunities for the Northwest Indiana community.
Clay says the tragic earthquake that took place while the group visited Beijing did not stop them from touring plants and meeting with their foreign counterparts. During the trip, clay signed a formal agreement to become the sister city of Fuxin, China. It's a partnership that he believes will bring greater trade opportunities and economic investment in Gary.
The sister city agreement must be formally approved by the Gary city council. If accepted, Clay plans to invite Chinese businesses to come to Gary to scout potential business opportunities.
