(GREENFIELD) - Police in Hancock County shot and wounded a suspect after they say he fled in a sheriff’s department patrol car.
A deputy stopped the car in Greenfield and called for a drug dog. The K-9 indicated narcotics were in the vehicle and police arrested 28-year-old Herbert Seay of Indianapolis.
Seay was handcuffed and placed in the front passenger seat of the deputy's car but managed to free himself and drive off in the patrol car. Officers opened fire and Seay was struck in the arm.
Cumberland Police put down stop sticks and Seay lost control of the car near Mount Comfort and wound up in a cornfield. He tried to flee but suffered bites when he was intercepted by a K-9. Police say his wounds are not life-threatening.
Hunt says the officers have been offered 3 days paid administrative leave but indicated they would like to return to work immediately. The sheriff told them it might be a good idea to take a day or two off and collect their thoughts.
A Greenfield officer was responding to the pursuit and was injured in a crash in downtown Greenfield, which had S.R. 9 blocked for a time. His condition was not available.
