(INDIANAPOLIS) - The surgeon general’s delivering this warning in person.
Surgeon General Steven Galson briefly grooved along with dancercising students from Indianapolis and Lawrence township. It's his latest stop on a nationwide tour to highlight local fitness programs, and warn about the health threat of childhood obesity.
Obesity rates have leveled off the last six years, but only after they nearly tripled in the '80s and '90s. "There are dietary influences," Galson says. "Easy availability of fast food, the fact that we have so many one-parent families, people that are working all the time and don't have time to prepare nutritious meals. And they're not taking the time to go out and get a lot of physical activity with the kids."
Galson says kids don't need to diet -- he says diets don't work anyway. What they need, he says, are sensible portions of healthy food, and at least an hour a day of physical activity.
