(HAMMOND) - A Hammond police officer who was injured on duty two years ago will receive close to 740,000 thousand dollars.
A Lake County jury awarded the settlement this week to patrolman 1st class Keith Thompson, Jr. He was responding to a disturbance call in April 2006, when a driver in a speeding sedan hit him and fled without stopping. Thompson's leg was broken during the hit and run.
Police later found the driver, 51-year-old Rochelle Fritz. Her blood-alcohol level was nearly double the legal limit.
Fritz's attorneys could appeal the settlement.
