(UNDATED) - The nation’s highest court sides with the state in the case of a mentally impaired man’s request to represent himself in court.
Ahmad Edwards was caught shoplifting in 1999 and shot at an unarmed security guard and a bystander before being subdued by a passing FBI agent.
He was twice declared incompetent to stand trial, but eventually regained the mental capacity to stand trial.
The jury deadlocked and Edwards was retried and defended himself, but a judge did not allow it since he failed to demonstrate an ability to reliably communicate.
