(UNDATED) - Part of a new state law allowing police to search personal computers of convicted sex offenders, has been struck down by a federal judge.
Such searches are often a condition of probation, but the new law would apply to those on the state sex offender registry long after completion of their sentences. The offenders are still required to submit their email addresses and user names when the law takes effect on July 1.
U.S. District Judge David Hamilton agrees with the American Civil Liberties Union that the search restrictions would violate privacy rights. There is no comment yet from the attorney general's office.
