(INDIANAPOLIS) - Abandoned and unused tires are a prime breeding ground for mosquitoes that are known to carry the West Nile virus.
To cut down on their population, the Marion County Health Department will take up to four tires off your hands for free on Saturday, Tire Amnesty Day.
Two locations are open from 8 to 4: the Marion County Health Department at 4001 east 21st and Pomp's Tire at 2120 South Harding.
John Althardt with the health department says rain and hot weather are the ingredients for a mosquito population boom. Tires are almost a perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes, which can lay their eggs in as little as two teaspoons of water.
Althardt says mosquitoes don't travel far from where they hatch, so eliminating standing water near your porch or patio will lessen the chance of getting bitten.
