Hoosiers Encouraged To Eat Local During "Going Local Week"

Last updated on Monday, August 11, 2008

(UNDATED) - Indiana consumers are encouraged to eat at least one locally grown food item at each meal during “Going Local Week.”

Creator and author of the "going local" website, Victoria Wesseler says there are many reasons for wanting to eat local food including knowing where the product came from and caring for the environment.

She recommends shopping at local farmers' markets, and farm stands , visit an orchard or u-pick; and learn if grocers and restaurants sell locally grown food.

Wesseler also says there's more than just produce in Indiana. She says there's at least 3000 pork producers in Indiana, along with Hoosier chickens, eggs, syrup and many specialty products.

Hoosiers can find local foods and producers by going to the Indiana marketmaker web site.

Going Local Week will be from August 31st to September 6th.
