(INDIANAPOLIS) - Marion County Sheriff Frank Anderson is starting a tobacco cessation program for members of the sheriff’s department called “Tobacco Free MCSD”.
This month, the sheriff is celebrating 31 years of remaining smoke-free. He says he quit smoking in one day as did his father and a brother, but another brother who didn't quit died five years ago from tobacco-related illnesses.
Anderson says department personnel are well aware of his concern about the health of smokers in their ranks. The sheriff says those smoking outside regularly hide or pitch their smokes when they see him coming.
The new program is voluntary and includes classes offered by Clarian's Tobacco Control Center.
Sheriff Anderson says it's a win-win situation for everyone including the employee, their family, the sheriff's department and the community.
