(INDIANAPOLIS) - Results of an investigation into procedures at the Indianapolis city animal shelter were presented in a public hearing Wednesday.
Two independent investigators looked into the shelter after grievances were filed by shelter volunteers against the shelter in August. Some shelter volunteers reported mistreatment of animals, including a maggot-infested kitten not receiving care and a terrified dog being dragged down a hallway.
Karen Jensen and Joan Isaacs say they substantiated both of major allegations and made recommendations to the Animal Care and Control Advisory Board.
Isaacs suggests random inspections and both suggest an oversight committee to look into any future allegations. Public Safety Director Scott Newman says a policy requiring sedation prior to any euthanization will be implemented and two more staff members will be hired at the shelter.
Both inspectors will combine their findings and present a final report to the board in two weeks. The board will discuss that report in their next meeting on October 8th.
