(UNDATED) - This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Fair Housing Act becoming law.
The act was intended to ensure that all Americans be treated equally in the rental or purchase of a home. The Fair Housing Act was signed by President Lyndon Johnson one week after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
The Indiana Civil Right Commission is the state's enforcement agency on fair housing. Executive Director Tony Kirland says fair housing was a main issue with the civil rights movement during that time and he says they're still dealing with housing discrimination on a daily basis.
