(WHITELAND) - 33 year old Vania Shields, one of the victims in Thursday’s fatal crash on I-65 in Johnson County, had been a paramedic for several years and joined the Wayne township fire department last May. She was on her way to work when the crash occurred.
Department Spokesman Captain Troy Wymer says she was an excellent paramedic and was very well liked by her co-workers. The irony is that over the years, she had responded to many fatal accidents, only to become a victim herself.
Her husband is a firefighter, who was working his last shift with the Shelbyville Fire Department before joining the Bargersville Fire Department.
Wymer says one of the first things they do when a member of the department loses their life is to assign a liaison from the department to the family. He says the department will work with the family to hold a memorial service for Shields.
