(FORT WAYNE) - Saint Joseph Hospital in Fort Wayne is officially opening its new regional burn center outpatient burn and wound clinic today.
The $7-million dollar unit contains 18,000 square feet of space, with 12 private inpatient rooms, 12 exam rooms and larger treatment areas.
The hospital's current burn center is one of three verified burn centers in the state and the only one combining pediatric and adult care. About 30 percent of the burn patients in the clinic are kids.
The center was expanded to account for a growing patient base. The hospital reported about 6,000 outpatient burn visits and nearly 7,000 outpatient wound visits in 2007.
There are 60 verified burn centers in the country.
