Ike Remnants Hit Indiana, Cuts Power To Thousands

Last updated on Monday, September 15, 2008

(UNDATED) - Hurricane Ike is just a tropical depression now, but his heavy rain and high wind have extended into Indiana.

5,000 people were blacked out in Indianapolis as the storm toppled trees and power lines. Duke Energy reported 108,000 of its customers without power. In Jennings County, power is out to 90,000 people.

A father and son were killed in Chesterton trying to help a group of children out of fast-moving water Sunday . Parts of Munster and Schererville have been evacuated, while Porter County has gotten 10.5 inches of rain -- the flooding shut down an eight-mile stretch of I-94. Flash flood warnings remain in effect through Monday for most of Northwest Indiana.

INDOT has transported 40,000 sandbags and more than 96,000 pounds of sand to Porter, Laporte and Lake counties in support of local sandbagging operations.

Falling trees were blamed for one death each in Clark and Ohio counties in Southern Indiana.
