(KOKOMO) - Kokomo city officials see nothing but positives coming from the interstate upgrade of U.S. 31 around the city.
Development Director Debbi Cook says studies have shown the bypass will have a good impact on the city's economy. Cook says she believes the city is already reaping the benefits with plans by FedEx to locate a distribution center in town.
Cook believes other companies will follow suit because of the interstate access and Kokomo's location to other major cities in the Midwest.
There are efforts and discussions on what can be done to assist the businesses and companies currently located along what will become Business 31.
Cook says a group known as The Wayfinders Task Force is considering signage and other plans that will direct traffic to consider coming off the high way and into the town to do business.
State Department of Transportation officials broke ground on the upgrade Wednesday. Completion of the project is expected in 8 years.
