(UNDATED) - An encouraging decline of drug use by teens is indicated in a new national survey.
Part of the decline is attributed to the national drug control media campaign raising awareness. Director of National Drug Control Policy John Walters says Indiana is slightly above the national average but is showing a decrease in teen drug use.
Walters says that 10% of Hoosier teens admit to using drugs. 8% of Hoosier teens say they used prescription drugs this year.
Even though prescription drug abuse is down among teens the NDCP is still focusing on the dangerous trend. Walters says kids have easier access to prescription drugs and that parents must control their accessibility.
Teenagers in Indiana may also be more exposed to illegal drugs because of the interstate system.
