(FRANKFORT) - Two groups of recently discovered Clinton County mosquitoes could leave behind more than annoying bites on area residents.
Clinton County Health Department's Craig Rich said the Indiana State Department of Health recently reported two pools of the bug carry West Nile Virus. Both groups of culex mosquitoes were located in the area behind Frankfort's old Wal-Mart building, Rich said, though he couldn't yet give an exact location. No human cases of the disease have been reported this year in Clinton County.
West Nile Virus is transferred to people through birds carrying the disease, according to a county health department release. Anyone can be affected, the release states, though people over age 50 face the greatest risk of a serious illness or death. Someone bitten by an infected mosquito often shows symptoms three to 15 days after the bite occurs, according to the release.
The area behind the old Wal-Mart building was also the site of a pool collected two years ago, Rich said, which makes their appearance there unsurprising.
