(INDIANAPOLIS) - Underage drinking was the topic of a two day conference held in Indianapolis this week.
The State Department of Education and the Indiana Coalition to Reduce Underage Drinking hosted several school officials and individuals help keep Hoosier children from drinking alcohol.
Indiana Coalition to Reduce Underage Drinking Director Lisa Hutcheson says its a big problem in the state, with alcohol abuse being measured in the 6th grade and it only increases through the 12th grade.
She says the overall numbers of juveniles who drink is down, but binge drinking numbers are up.
Hutcheson says it begins with parents, but communities and faith-based groups are also responsible for combating the problem. She says the state is also trying to help with Department of Education grants to schools.
