(INDIANAPOLIS) - Over 100 luminaries lit up the monument in Downtown Indianapolis remembering infants who have passed away. “An Evening For Ella” was organized by Mel McMahon of Indianapolis who lost her daughter Ella to SIDS 6 months ago.
McMahon says its a healing process for her and the community and it also raises awareness.
The State of Indiana SIDS and Infant Loss Coordinator Barbara Himes says no one knows what causes SIDS or how to prevent it, but they do have ways to reduce it. She says safe sleep is the key with babies on their backs, firm mattresses, no pillows or even bumper beds.
Himes says Indiana experiences about 50 SIDS deaths each year
