(UNDATED) - The cooler weather of October marks the beginning of the “home fire season.”
The number of home fires and resulting deaths dramatically increases October through March . Last year's "home fire season" experienced nearly a 24 percent increase in the number of fatal home fires.
Smoking is the number one cause of home fire deaths in the United States. That could be a problem in Indiana since more than 27 percent of Hoosier adults smoke. That marks the Hoosier state as the second highest in the nation.
Fire officials say most fires caused by smoking materials start on beds, furniture, or in trash.
Chief Greg Cade, assistant administrator for the U.S. Fire Administration says if you are going to smoke, put out the cigarette completely and don't smoke in bed or if you're fatigued.
