COLUMBUS) - A national historic landmark in Bartholomew County will become a part of the collection for The Indianapolis Museum Of Art.
IMA officials announced the acquisition of the Miller House and Garden in Columbus.
The property was listed as a national historic landmark in 2000 as an example of the modernist movement in the US.
Indiana philanthropist and former cummins chairman Irwin Miller and his wife commissioned the construction of the home in 1957.
Famed architect Eero Saarinan designed the structure, Alexander Girard designed the interior, and Daniel Urban Kiley designed the landscape.
The Miller family and foundation donated the property and many original furnishings to the IMA along with 5 million dollars toward an endowment for the property's maintenance.
Public affairs director Katie Zarich says the museum hopes to raise another 3 million dollars for the endowment and 2 million dollars to restore the property to its original design.
The museum plans re-open the property for public tours in 2 years with support from the Columbus Convention and Visitor'S Bureau.
Zarich says this type of unique partnership for structural art acquisitions is being viewed as a model by other art museums around the country.
