(UNDATED) - Now that cold weather is here and heaters are being used, carbon monoxide is a concern.
The "silent killer" claims over 1,300 people per year in the country.
Indianapolis Fire Department Assistant Fire Marshal Fred Pervine carbon monoxide problems are a major concern that don't likely get reported.
Pervine says the first line of defense is a carbon monoxide detector that should be placed near where gas appliances are located. He also says to get your gas appliances checked for leaks and proper ventilation.
