(UNION CITY) - A converted hybrid-electric school bus is picking up students in the Randolph Eastern School District this morning.
The Union City company that made the conversion believes that it is the first of its kind in the nation.
Productive concepts, inc. President Rob Lykins turned over the bus to school officials in Union City on Saturday.
Lykins says his company has already been making converted hybrid-electric airport shuttle buses.
Senator Richard Lugar attended the dedication ceremony, and called the new kind of school bus an innovative way to help reduce our country's dependence on foreign oil.
Productive concepts, inc. is currently working on two similar conversions for the Fort Wayne Community Schools and is pitching the concept to other school systems across the state.
