(EVANSVILLE) - Evansville Mayor Jonathan Weinzapfel is introducing a new director for Mesker Park Zoo and Botanic Garden.
Weinzapfel says the city has hired the current curator of mammals at the Pittsburgh Zoo and P-P-G aquarium. Amos Morris, who has 19-years experience in the zoo business.
Weinzapfel says the city new the zoo was in good hands with it's interim director and staff and knew it could take some time to find the right person.
Morris begins his job at Mesker Zoo in early January and says he plans to work closely with the zoo staff to see which direction the zoo should go next.
Morris is full of praise for the local zoo's eleven-million-dollar Amazonia rainforest exhibit.
It opened in early August and Mayor Weinzapfel says the zoo's attendance has increased dramatically from the same time period a year ago.
Morris says one are he'd like to make some changes at Mesker Zoo is in the way animals are contained.
Many of them are behind chain link fence and bars.
He says that's very "old philosophy."
