(UNDATED) - If you’re clearing your yard of a lot of fallen tree limbs in the wake of recent ice storms, you may have that tree devastating Asian bug to thank for your extra labor.
Purdue Entolomogist Jodie Ellis says limbs and branches weakened by the emerald ash borer would be susceptible to breakage under the weight of heavy ice.
The Department of Natural Resources wants residents to remember the state ban on the transportation of firewood in efforts to control the spread of the bug and suggests the limbs be used as firewood or professionally disposed locally.
DNR officials have found the emerald ash borer in 20 Indiana counties. The bug is believed to responsible for the devastation of millions of ash trees in Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana over the last 5 to 7 years.
