(UNDATED) - Gas prices are lower than they were this time last year, but the recession is keeping people closer to home this holiday season.
The AAA Hoosier Motor Club expects says the number of Americans who plan to travel at least 50 miles from home during the holidays to drop this year. An estimated 63.9 million people are expected to drive, fly or take another mode of transportation more than 50 miles. That's 2.1 percent fewer than those who traveled last year.
Spokesman Greg Seiter says the drop is expected even with gas prices averaging a dollar sixty five a gallon in Indiana -- well over a buck lower than the same time last year.
AAA attributes the decline to a worsening economy. The group predicts a drop for the first time since 2002.
